It's 1951, and Czeslaw Wierzbicki is on the lookout for a hero after losing his father in WWII. With his uncle who can't seem to hold a job for more than a few months, Czeslaw sets out on a life-changing journey that takes him from Detroit to Edinburgh, in hopes of meeting Wojtek, the legendary Polish soldier bear.

In 1951, eleven-year-old Czeslaw, mostly known as Chester, is picked on for not having a father. He, of course, DID have a father - "he’d died in the Battle of Monte Cassino during World War II." Chester lives in Detroit with his mother and Uncle Izzy. Chester's mother is a chemist and manages to keep the family afloat. That's good, because Izzy has trouble getting and keeping a job. Though he possesses no physical scars from the war, he is tormented by memories that only alcohol can chase away.

Chester and Izzy like to escape to the roof of their apartment building where Izzy regales the young boy with tales of a mystical bear called Wojtek. Found as a cub by members of Izzy's unit, the bear grew fond of his soldier companions, (and alcohol!), and served as mascot of the Second Company.
While many people considered Izzy's stories as little more than drunken ramblings, Chester is enthralled by the tales. Besides being highly entertaining, he sees them as a link to his father who also served in Second Company.

It takes some doing, but Chester finally manages to convince his mother to allow him to accompany Izzy on a trip to a magical place called...Cleveland. Once there, their discoveries will lead to even further adventures, including a long voyage to visit an old friend. The duo is determined to see this thing through, even if it means incurring the wrath of MOM.

This was a wonderful story that has an autobiographical feel to it. I hate to use the word "heartwarming," but it was, it was. Funny, sweet, touching...yeah, I was blubbering by the end.

Highly recommended.

Bear Season Bernie Hafeli 9780982595657 Books Reviews

Other reviewers have summed up the virtues of Bear Season, and I agree. It is well written, pleasant to read, a great story, and oh so human. Are there bears like this? I hope so.
Bear Season is a rare composite of feelings, connections, and history. Hafeli triggers visual memories with his seemingly easy use of descriptive images. His ability to bring characters to life with subtle realism and capture their emotional intricacies is a unique gift. The sensitivity of personal responses, within and between the characters,
is touching and real. This compelling read cries out for the big screen. Bear Season is a tiny epic that will cling to your heart. Sharon Lapid, Coronado CA
Bear Season transports the reader to 1951 and 11-year-old Czeslaw Wierzbicki (his American name "Chester") who longs for his father, who was killed in World War II. Through specific and precise detail Hafeli creates a complex, rich, engaging world, in which Czeslaw's uncle serves as a proxy to his father, though his uncle is often a poor substitute because of his proclivity to drink. Hafeli's pacing is spot on and his scenes are well-developed. Told using the first person (Czeslaw), the story veers away from sentimentalism and stays well-grounded in the honest fact of losing a father. A wonderful read!
The depth of intelligence and insight revealed in this story is amazing and humbling. This is a writer who has the skill to create honest, complex characters that any caring reader simply MUST care about. I almost didn't read this because of the title, thinking it was probably an ordinary hunting story. What a mistake that would have been!
This book is just magnificent , the writer ( Bernie Hafeli ) is very detailing about what going on in the story , i just have a great time reading this book . very recommended. Thanks Bernie for this beautiful story.
Highly recommended novel--I read it straight through cover to cover in a few hours. I was reminded of Nelson Algren's depiction of Polish Americans, only this seemed more native and tenderhearted, without the cynical, outsider's view Algren brought to the subject. Where Algren's characters seem like beautiful, distant broken objects, Hafeli shows us this world through the eyes of an eleven year old child, Czeslaw, or "Chester" as he is known to his classmates. The resulting narrative of Chester's first trip away from his home town with his alcoholic uncle is both charming and at times, a bit harrowing. I won't spoil the rest, buy it, pour a cup of coffee, or possibly vodka, and give it a read.
Bernie Hafeli writes so beautifully I could not put this book down. He carries you along the journey of the boy and the uncle and even though I was skeptical about the story, I was totally engrossed from the first page. Did the bear really exist or was he a fabrication? I couldn't wait to find out. The writing really captures the post-war era and I was reminiscing about my childhood and remembering hearing my father's stories about his experiences driving an ambulance in Italy during the war. Bernie gets all the details, all the emotions, and the nostalgia just right. A masterful work by a master writer.
